NEGATIVE SPACE

July 14th, 2024 from 9am-noon

Negative space is the “blank” space in between the flowers in an arrangement- the places where you don’t put something. If you are wanting to create designs with unique and intentional movement that feel airy, spacious, and light, negative space is one of the most essential concepts to understand. In this three-hour workshop with Botanique’s owner and Creative director Kelly Sullivan, we will explore the space in between the flowers- the very important, and sometimes elusive, empty spaces that are so essential to a feeling of lightness and movement in your designs. Working in a shallow vessel and using a flower frog as an anchor, we will discuss both the mechanics and artistic aspects of creating designs that are airy and intentional. We will also explore the possibilities of working with more minimal palettes and how to create eye-catching combinations with fewer ingredients. With a plethora of gorgeous, seasonal materials to choose from, students will be able to create designs that are as lush or minimal as they choose, applying the concepts in this workshop. There will be ample time for everyone to create their own floral masterpiece.

Leaving skillfully crafted space in your designs can be challenging. If you have been struggling with feeling like your arrangements are too dense, or that you always end up with a design that feels chunky, this workshop is for you. If you are wanting to take a deep dive into concepts of movement, artistry, and intentional design, this workshop is also for you! And if you are just wanting to come have fun with flowers and learn some tips and tricks along the way, you are also very welcome here!

No previous experience is required to participate in this workshop, however we will be spending the majority of our time on more advanced design skills and concepts, and not going in-depth with the basics.

Registration will be capped at 10 participants, and early registration is advised.
